While working one afternoon, my office-mate got a tip that there were killer whales in Oriental Bay -- just down the road from Weta. Turned out to be a mama & her three babies (also saw some dolphins recently). Here's the video. Oh, & the 2nd half of the video is a super-bowl half-time show starring my two new friends Amy & Biddy.
Besides that, I've been doing the summertime Christmas thing & writing some. Here's a couple bits of things:
//--
In the computer, I make a rock out of a non-uniform radial b-spline with procedural displacement. When I sit down for lunch, I find it in my pocket. It's light, like the volcanic rock my grandfather gave me when I was eleven. The wind blows it off the table, and I scramble for it, worried someone will guess it's not a real rock. Arun sits down. He has filled up our glasses with water from the fountain and has dirt on his clothes. I hand him the rock, and he seems confused. He asks me how I got it out of the computer and I try to explain, but it's extremely hard to explain. It's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, like I'm trying to push an enormous parked car, and then I realize I have to hold the rock just right, or it will turn into rice, rice is spilling through my fingers, until there is only rice all over my pants & at the center of the rock is a little puff of cigarette smoke.

hurricane woman,
destroyer, beautiful
cloudy counter-clockwise
arguments, windy
slammer of car doors.
I offer sacrifice
in the flooding cellar,
beneath the alter
of your Eye;
flip flops,
a summer skirt,
a lifeless kite
and slack string,
but not me.
not to the tunnel,
the windy drill,
the threaded barrel
and guilty, empty chamber.
twist open gale and flame,
sweep clean, collector
of vital nick knacks,
you've stolen my car keys,
my library card,
my small dog (leashed!),
my wife and family,
my country and way
of thinking. spell
my name with a tangled
line of back-roads --
drive your mood swing
across those mountains, away.
