South Island 2

After I left Tukura Beach, I drove on a long dirt road out to a grassy parking lot near Amy's house. My car amost got stuck in a stream, but it's a good car pat pat. To actually get to Amy's house, you have to wait until low tide & then cross an empty tidal basin.

Those dots on the right & left are people. It's a long walk -- muddy in patches & you have to ford small streams.

Luckily, I got a ride from a friendly guy w/a blue tractor.

Suckers.

Thanks, Shane.

Amy's house.

Went for a walk. Both Amy & Nick wore black against the orange sand & the light was so nice -- I wish I took more pictures of them!

looking "athletic."

Next morning I went for a walk up into the mountains.

Amy's house is slightly left of center. Later in the day, Nick & I paddled out to one of those beaches.

Here's what the basin looks like almost full. Snappers come in & dig holes in the mud, & sting rays glide around menacingly.

Took a walk to the lodge for internet. Amy's folks have no phone & get electricity from solar panels & batteries (as far as I can tell).

Grinning Louise on the left.

Louise & Nick.

Not so lucky w/the tides on the way out.
